Family Class Sponsorship Application for Immigrating to Canada from South Africa
One of the toughest things about immigrating to Canada from South Africa is leaving your family behind. It can be very difficult to adjust to your new country if you do not have your family and support system with you. Unfortunately you may have no choice but to immigrate to Canada from South Africa without them.
The Canadian government recognizes the importance of having your family with you in Canada and it is with this in mind that they created the Family Class. The Family Class allows you to sponsor certain family members to Canada once you have become a permanent resident of Canada or if you are a Canadian citizen. In order to be eligible to sponsor a family member you also need to be at least 18 years of age and living in Canada or planning to live in Canada once your sponsorship application has been completed.
This Family Class will not allow you to bring your extended family to Canada. This programme is limited to immediate family. When you are sponsoring family you will be limited to sponsoring the following relations:
- Spouse / Common-Law Partner / Conjugal Partner
- Parent (including adoptive parents)
- Brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, or grandchildren who are orphaned, are under 18 and do not have a spouse or common-law partner
A Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident can also sponsor any one relative to Canada, regardless of age, but only if they do not have a living relative who is one of the following AND they do not have any other living relatives who are a Canadian Citizen, Canadian Permanent Resident or a Registered Indian:
- Your spouse/common-law/conjugal partner
- Your child
- Your parent
- Your grandparent
- Your sibling
- Your aunt or uncle
Once they have become a permanent residents in Canada they will legally able to live, work and study in Canada, regardless of their skill level. The eligibility criteria applied to other visa applications is not applicable under this program. The down side is that you will be immigrating to Canada from South Africa on your own at first and only after you qualify as a permanent resident will you be able to sponsor your eligible family members to live with you in Canada.
In order to sponsor an eligible relative you will need to be able to provide for them by providing basic needs such as food, shelter and clothing. You will need to be able to show that you can support your family members financially and that none of your sponsored family members will seek help from the Canadian government. As their sponsor you will be completely responsible for their wellbeing and financial requirements for a specified period of time depending on their relation to you.
You will need to complete various immigration forms for the sponsor and for the applicant which are specific to your country of origin.
